New Hope
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.During 2024 and 2025, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office reported 1,011 domestic-violence-related offenses—539 in 2024 and 472 in 2025. Domestic violence can be especially difficult to escape in rural areas. Survivors may live far from law enforcement, medical care, shelters, courts, and other support services. Limited transportation, unreliable phone or internet service, financial dependence, and concern about being recognized can make it harder to seek help safely. These challenges make awareness, confidential services, supportive neighbors, and coordinated community resources especially important in Grant County.Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, income, education, or background. It may include physical violence, threats, intimidation, stalking, emotional abuse, financial control, or other behavior used to gain power over another person. This month, we remember those whose lives have been taken, recognize the courage of survivors, and thank the advocates and community partners who help people find safety and support. If someone tells you they are experiencing abuse, listen without judgment. Believe them. Let them make their own decisions, and help connect them with resources when they are ready. Leaving an abusive relationship can be dangerous, and each person’s circumstances are different. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.For free, confidential support 24 hours a day, contact:• New Hope at 888-560-6027, or• National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), text START to 88788, or visit TheHotline.org.Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in their relationships. Help is available, and you are not alone.EM-3 ...
